Grams to Teaspoons Conversion

Converting grams to teaspoons isn't a straight multiplication. It depends on what you're measuring. Grams measure weight, teaspoons measure volume. A gram of sugar takes up more space than a gram of salt. Select your ingredient below for an instant conversion, or scroll to the reference charts for common gram amounts already converted.

Why Grams and Teaspoons Don't Convert Simply

Grams and teaspoons measure fundamentally different things. Grams measure mass (weight). Teaspoons measure volume (space). Because different substances have different densities, the same number of grams occupies different amounts of space depending on what you're measuring.

Think of it this way: 5 grams of feathers takes up far more space than 5 grams of lead. Cooking ingredients work the same way, just less dramatically. 5 grams of table salt fills about 0.85 teaspoons. 5 grams of powdered sugar fills about 2 teaspoons. Same weight, very different volume.

The Formula

Teaspoons = Grams ÷ Grams per Teaspoon (density)

Example: 10g of sugar ÷ 4.2 g/tsp = 2.38 tsp. 6g of baking powder ÷ 4.4 g/tsp = 1.36 tsp.

Level vs. Heaped Teaspoons

All conversions on this page assume a level teaspoon (filled and leveled off with a straight edge). A heaped teaspoon can contain 1.5 to 2× the volume of a level teaspoon. When a recipe calls for a teaspoon, always assume level unless it says "heaped."

US vs. Metric Teaspoon

US teaspoon = 4.929 mL. Metric teaspoon (UK, Australia) = 5.0 mL. The difference is about 1.4%, rarely matters in everyday cooking. All conversions here use the US teaspoon.

Grams of Salt to Teaspoons

Salt type matters enormously. Table salt, Diamond Crystal kosher, and Morton kosher all have very different volumes per gram.

15g2.545.363.122.73

Kosher salt varies dramatically by brand. 1 tsp Diamond Crystal ≈ 2.8g. 1 tsp Morton Kosher ≈ 4.8g. 1 tsp Table Salt ≈ 5.9g. If a recipe was developed with one type, substituting another by volume can significantly over- or under-salt the dish.

Grams of Flour to Teaspoons

All-purpose flour (unsifted): about 2.6 grams per teaspoon. For larger amounts, cups or grams by weight are more accurate.

Active dry yeast and instant yeast are NOT 1:1 by volume. If substituting instant for active dry, use 25% less. A standard packet of yeast = 7g ≈ 2.25 tsp active dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many teaspoons is 5 grams?

It depends on the ingredient. 5 grams of granulated sugar is about 1.19 teaspoons. 5 grams of table salt is about 0.85 teaspoons. 5 grams of baking powder is about 1.14 teaspoons.

How many teaspoons is 10 grams of sugar?

10 grams of granulated white sugar equals approximately 2.38 teaspoons. The density of granulated sugar is about 4.2 grams per level teaspoon, so divide 10 by 4.2.

How many teaspoons is 1 gram?

1 gram equals approximately 0.24 teaspoons of granulated sugar, 0.17 teaspoons of table salt, 0.23 teaspoons of baking powder, or 0.38 teaspoons of all-purpose flour.

How many grams is 1 teaspoon of sugar?

One level teaspoon of granulated white sugar weighs approximately 4.2 grams. Powdered sugar weighs about 2.5 grams per teaspoon. Brown sugar (packed) weighs about 4.5 grams.

How many grams is 1 teaspoon of salt?

One level teaspoon of table salt weighs approximately 5.9 grams. Diamond Crystal kosher salt is much lighter at 2.8 grams per teaspoon. Morton kosher salt weighs about 4.8 grams.

Always check which salt a recipe was developed with, as the difference is significant.

How many grams is 1 teaspoon of baking powder?

One level teaspoon of baking powder weighs approximately 4.4 grams. Baking soda is denser at 6 grams per teaspoon.

How many grams is a packet of yeast?

A standard packet of active dry yeast contains 7 grams, approximately 2.25 teaspoons. A packet of instant yeast also contains 7 grams but is stronger.

Why can't I just multiply grams by a single number?

Because teaspoons measure volume and grams measure weight, and different substances have different densities. One teaspoon of table salt contains nearly 6 grams. One teaspoon of almond flour contains only about 2 grams.

Without knowing the ingredient, there's no single conversion factor.
